Advent 3: 2020

Can you believe it’s already the Third Sunday of Advent? We’re over half-way to Christmas! I for one haven't been as introspective as I had hoped planned. Quiet waiting and praying has been pulled into the general 'getting stuff done' of the every day and of the pre-Christmas time. Even in this unusual year, when holiday celebrations will be socially distant, there seems to be a lot to get done.

This week a couple of friends shared they are feeling the weirdness of time in this season and esp. this COVID-tide. Even more than usual, time seems to have a mind of its own. Sometimes a day lasts forever and then suddenly you realize it’s the THIRD Sunday of Advent! It would be no surprise to have something like the experience recorded in the Book of Joshua: So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies, as it is written in the Book of Jashar. The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. (Joshua 10:13)

In fact, you probably have heard that there will be a rare sight in the heavens on the Winter Solstice (Dec. 21). The planets of Jupiter and Saturn will have one of the rare ‘Great Conjunctions’ and form what will appear to be the ‘Christmas Star’. They are in the southwestern sky slightly after sunset, getting closer and closer all week. This is the first time in 800 years these 2 planets have appeared close enough together in the sky to provide this phenomenon. The last time was in 1226. You can watch the actual conjunction via live stream courtesy of the Lowell Observatory. The link to the live stream is in this article.

My thoughts and images from last week are here. Mostly the words reminded me of scripture. What did you think of?

This week, each of the Advent Words is one of the disciplines in the Way of Love. You may remember that I’ve done a couple series looking at the Way of Love on this blog, including Advent 2018.

What will the Spirit say to you through this week’s words? I will try to remember to live into these 7 disciplines this week as I think about the words.
